The Council of Nicea and Ol St. Nick
Students learn about the real “St. Nick” and what happened at the Council of Nicea in A.D 325 in The Romans: Nicene Christianity and Christendom: Defense of the Faith
St. Nicholas was born during the third century in the village of Patara in Asia Minor to wealthy parents who were devout Christians. After his parents died in an epidemic when he was quite young, Nicholas dedicated his life to serving God and used his inheritance to assist the poor, sick, and needy. He became Bishop of Myra while still a young man, and was known throughout the land for his generosity, his love for children, and his concern for sailors.
Nicholas was exiled and imprisoned for his faith under the Roman Emperor Diocletian. After his release, he attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. Nicholas died on December 6th, AD 343 and was buried in his cathedral church in Myra. The anniversary of his death became a day of cele- bration, St. Nicholas Day.
